Paul Lavon Davis (April 21, 1948 – April 22, 2008) was an American singer and songwriter, best known for his radio hits and solo career which started worldwide in 1970. His career encompassed soulcountry and pop music. Notable songs in his career include 1977’s “I Go Crazy“, a #7 pop hit which once held the record for the longest chart run on the Billboard Hot 100, as well as the #6 “’65 Love Affair“, his highest-charting pop hit. In the mid 1980s, he also had two country #1 hits as a guest vocalist on songs by Marie Osmond and Tanya Tucker, and wrote singles for other country singers.

Davis was a member of a local group called the Six Soul Survivors in approximately 1966 and later in another group called the Endless Chain. In 1968 he was a writer for Malaco Records, based in JacksonMississippi.

Career

Ilene Berns, widow of Bert Berns, signed Davis to Bang Records in 1969, and in 1970, released a cover version of The Jarmels‘ hit song “A Little Bit of Soap“, reaching #52 on the Billboard pop charts. His first album, A Little Bit of Paul Davis, was released in 1970. In 1974, he recorded his third album, Ride ‘Em Cowboy, which entered the Top 40 for the title track. The same song also became a Top 40 Country hit for Juice Newton in 1984.

Davis had his first American Top 10 single with the ballad “I Go Crazy,” which peaked at #7 in 1978. “I Go Crazy” spent 40 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100, which at the time set the single-song record for most consecutive weeks on the chart in the rock era. The follow-up, “Sweet Life”, also did well, peaking at #4 Adult Contemporary and #17 Pop. The corresponding album Singer of Songs – Teller of Taleswas a modest success, peaking at #82 on the Billboard pop album chart. He was the last artist active on the Bang Records label when it folded in 1981.

After one more album on the Bang label, Paul Davis signed with Arista Records in 1981 and scored two more Top 15 singles, “Cool Night” (which reached #11 on Billboard‘s Hot 100 and hit #2 at Adult Contemporary in January 1982) and “’65 Love Affair” (a major Top 10 hit at both Pop and Adult Contemporary). His Arista debut album spawned a third hit with Davis’ remake of “Love or Let Me Be Lonely“. The single contained a third verse of music which was not included on the album version, and despite its top 40 and AC success, this single version has never been reissued on any CD including the various Paul Davis anthologies that have been released on CD. Davis retired from making records for a time, except for two duet singles that went to #1 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles charts. The first was in 1986 with Marie Osmond on “You’re Still New to Me” while the second was in 1988 was a collaboration with Tanya Tucker and Paul Overstreet on “I Won’t Take Less Than Your Love“. Davis also wrote “Meet Me in Montana,” which Paul’s friend Dan Seals and Osmond took to #1 on the Billboard Country chart in 1985, and “Bop”, a solo #1 Country hit for Dan Seals in 1986. Through the years Paul was heavily influenced by technology, he owned a lot of synthesizers, samplers he spent his days at home composing for films. He was very versatile with sampling & using the Synclavier & Fairlight CMI

Before his death on April 22, 2008 (one day after his 60th birthday), Paul Davis returned to singing and songwriting recording two songs, “You Ain’t Sweet Enough” and “Today.” He died of a heart attack at the Rush Foundation Hospital in Meridian, Mississippi.

Personal life

Davis survived a shooting in NashvilleTennessee on July 29, 1986. He was leaving a hotel on Music Row with a female companion when an unidentified man walked up, demanded his wallet, and shot him in the abdomen. [1] [2]

Country music singer Charly McClain‘s song, “Best That Never Was”, was specially written and dedicated to Paul Davis on her 1983 album Paradise.

Tragedy at Nancy Kerrigan’s Childhood Home | PopEater.com.

Sixteen years after the attack that came to define the skating legend’s career, Nancy Kerrigan has suffered again. Her father Daniel died on Sunday, and her brother Mark might be responsible. He’s been been booked for assault, though Nancy’s mother says a heart attack is the real culprit. In other news, tragedy struck South American athletics on Monday, as star Paraguayan striker Salvador Cabanas was shot in the head while at a bar with his family. He’s currently in serious condition at a hospital in Mexico City. This is What You’re Searching for Today

Nancy Kerrigan Family Tragedy
– It all transpired in the very home where the Olympic silver medalist was raised. Nancy Kerrigan’s father, 70-year-old Daniel Kerrigan was found unresponsive and taken to a Boston area hospital, where he was pronounced dead on Sunday morning. Nancy’s brother Mark has been charged with assault and battery in conection with the incident. According to various news sources, he thought his father was “faking it” when he collapsed during a fight over the telephone. Nancy’s mother Brenda tells the Boston Herald, “My husband had a massive heart attack. This is a very difficult time for me.” According to the Herald, the police report indicates Mark “put his hands around his father’s neck,” and had to be subdued with pepper spray when authorities responded on the scene. The younger Kerrigan appeared intoxicated, according to the report. Daniel Kerrigan’s death comes two weeks after the sixteenth anniversary of Tonya Harding‘s infamous attack on Nancy at the 1994 U.S. Figure Skating Championships.

That saying “hell hath no fury like a woman scorned”? It just got real, y’all: Gawker has multiple sources saying that a lovey-dovey billboard in Times Square featuring a huge photo of a couple named Charles Phillips and YaVaughnie Wilkins is actually the work of a scorned mistress (that would be YaVaughnie Wilkins) who wants to embarrass her former lover. Not only might Phillips be a married man, but he is also the co-president of a company called Oracle and a member of Obama’s Economic Recovery Advisory Board.

Oh, dear.

The romantic billboards, which appear in possibly three locations in Manhattan, show a picture of a man and woman, with the words “‘You are my soulmate forever! – cep’” written across the top and the website “charlesphillipsandyavaughniewilkins.com” written across the bottom. To regular folks looking at the billboard, it appeared to be a sweet declaration of love. Visitors to the now-unavailable site were treated to pictures of Wilkins and Phillips cuddling, tickets for the events they allegedly attended together (including the Obama Inauguration), and numerous cards from him saying things like “You’re the only woman for me!” (That was a Valentine’s Day card).

But Gawker started sniffing around and, through tips, had multiple sources tell them that Wilkins is allegedly Phillips’ angry mistress, with whom he has carried on an eight-year affair. Phillips allegedly has either a wife or ex-wife named Karen Phillips, who is the mother of his tween son and with whom he has attended hoity-toity New York City events as recently as this December.

Gawker got in touch with the website’s designer, Bela Kovács, who confirmed that Wilkins hired him to create the site — only he thought the gesture was so sweet that Wilkins must have been Philips’ wife. “My understanding was that the site was for a gift to Charles, that’s what I was told,” Kovács told Gawker. “She was ecstatic when it finally launched and the whole thing was done.”

Yeah, I’ll bet she was.

My, oh, my. What has happened to the days when mistresses were discreet, hmm? First Rielle Hunter gets knocked up with John Edwards’ kid. Then Brooke Hundley stalks ESPN’s Steve Phillips’ teenaged son online. And now this!

Married men, when will you learn to just keep it in your pants?
