BONITA SPRINGS — It’s cinema, the sequel.

Four months after Regal Stadium 12 shuttered its doors in Bonita Springs, a new movie theater has announced plans for a return to the big screen in full Hollywood style, with more bells and more whistles.

Cinema Café is expected to open in February in The Prado at Spring Creek on U.S. 41, featuring 12 screens, leather seats, beer and wine service, a grill menu and waiter service.

“The Prado Cinema Café will bring a long overdue, upgraded cinema experience with value-added services to the Lee County area, but at affordable, everyday prices,” said Doug Olson, sales and leasing specialist for LandQwest Commercial, who secured the deal.

The news is breathing hope into a shopping center plagued with vacancies.

Half of The Prado’s 24 storefronts display leasing signs and a couple of the stand-alone stores in the plaza also are closed or going out of business.

“It’ll definitely be positive for this whole strip,” said Michael Cirella, owner of Cirella’s Italian bistro and sushi bar.

Regal’s departure in June highlighted for him just how much the foot traffic to the theater benefited his business, especially during the off season.

“We lost that before-movie diner or after-movie diner,” Cirella said.

Linda Potter, a Bonita Bay resident who lives one stoplight away from the theater, said she always looked forward to dining at Cirella’s and walking down to the theater to take in a flick.

Spending the summer in Pittsburgh, Potter had heard before she returned to Bonita Springs this month that Regal closed and was thrilled to hear movies were making a comeback.

“I would love to have the theater come back,” she said as she shopped a few doors down at Wilford & Lee Home Accents. “It’s been sad driving around and seeing all of the stores that have closed.”

Kate Barnhart, manager of the local home goods store, said the Wilford & Lee didn’t sell much to moviegoers who often browsed the colorful store’s glassware and displays. But she was hopeful the store made an impression and brought them back later.

She said a cinema returning to one of the anchor spaces could prove to other tenants that The Prado is still worth investing in.

“The more stores we can get, the more prospects we can also get,” Barnhart said.

Olson said there are plans to make those prospects a reality.

“We are currently working with several more entertainment-oriented retailers and restaurants to join them,” he said. “Our goal is to make The Prado a family entertainment hub for south Lee and north Collier counties.”

Barnhart said it’s been difficult hanging on while so many businesses have left, but she’s positive that the future is brighter, and Cinema Café is a step in the right direction.

“It’s going to get better,” she said. “It can’t get any worse.”
